Nutrition

What is Nutrition?

Nutrition is the study of food and how our bodies use it as fuel for growth and daily activities. The way we eat can have a huge impact on our state of health and well-being. It can also impact the way a child feels about him/herself and about the world. Food is broken down into two categories:

1. Micronutrients
2. Macronutrients

Micronutrients or “Micro Nutrition” includes vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Unfortunately, many of the foods that we eat are depleted in many nutrients which can affect our overall health.
Macronutrients or “Macro Nutrition” includes carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

Why is Nutrition Important?

Autism produces a range of symptoms and affects every system in the body. The use of holistic approaches offers a natural approach to restoring balance and optimal functioning. Every person is unique therefore, it is important to create customized protocols for each individual.

Gluten and casein may be extremely harmful due to possible leakage of these proteins into the bloodstream. This may cause the body’s immune system to attack these foreign proteins creating inflammatory reactions, as well as affecting the opiate receptors of the brain. As a result, some children with autism may appear as if they are “drugged” and react emotionally and have unusual behavior. It is common to have intense cravings or addictions for gluten and casein containing foods. Many children want only these foods and are not interested in anything else.
